Greetings from Philadelphia!

November 20, 2010

NSSLHA has been having a wonderful time here in Philadelphia!  Your NSSLHA Executive Council has been meeting since Wednesday having important discussions and making decisions to  your organization.  We’ve also had the honor to meet with many great professionals from ASHA, including current ASHA president, Tommie Robinson, and ASHA president-elect Paul Rao.  The council also had the pleasure with meeting with ASHA Convention chairs about next year’s convention.  That’s just to name a few!

We were able to meet and talk to a lot of students at the NSSLHA Lounge which was located in the Graduate Student Fair in the Exhibit Hall.  Thanks to everyone who stopped by!  We enjoyed meeting and getting to know you!

NSSLHA Day was a huge success!!  Courses regarding the Praxis exam, externships/practicums, and certification were offered.  The Crash Course offered round table discussions on many different areas of speech language pathology and audiology.  We had an AMAZING turn out for each session!  The rooms were packed! We are already working on how to make next years even better!

At the NSSLHA Luncheon, individuals and chapters were recognized for their outstanding achievements over the past year.  Dale Evan Metz, editor of CICSD for six years, was recognized with NSSLHA Honors, the highest honors of our association.  Stephanie Beebe, from the University of Mississippi, was recognized as Chapter Advisor of the Year.  University of Virginia was spotlighted as the NSSLHA Chapter of the Year.  Several other chapters across the nation received Chapter Recognition Status.  We are so proud of each of these chapters.

The 3rd Annual Knowledge Bowl was a huge success!  Our emcees for the event provided many laughs and had a blast throwing out t-shirts to the great crowd on hand.  We were honored to have ASHA President Elect, Paul Rao, in the crowd cheering on the teams.  Teams representing each of the 10 regions showed their knowledge!  1st place went to the University of Florida Graduate Chapter, “The ArticuGators”.  This team took home a cash prize of $1000 to be split among their members. 2nd prize of $750 went to Howard University, “Howard You Doin’?” 3rd place winning $500 went to Southeastern Louisiana University, “The Hot Bagels”.  Congratulations to all of the teams who participated for representing your schools and regions so well!!

The NSSLHA Executive Council is very excited to announce that we have reached our goal of $100,000 in order to fund a scholarship for NSSLHA Students.  Be on the lookout for more information regarding this scholarship in the future!

As this blog closes, we leave you with a view from the meeting room of the NSSLHA Executive Council at Loew’s Hotel.  While we are sad to see our time here in Philadelphia come to a close, we are truly excited about the things that will come in the next year!  From Phildelphia, signing off!

PS – ASHA Convention is in San Diego, CA next year!
