University of Nebraska at Omaha’s NSSLHA Chapter Has Successful Spring Semester!

May 4, 2010

The University of Nebraska at Omaha’s NSSLHA has been very active in the community this semester!

Throughout the semester, members volunteer each Sunday at Step by Step, a dance class for kids with autism taught by one of our officers. The first Monday of every month our NSSLHA members volunteer at Pump it Up! autism night where kids with autism play at the inflatable party zone.

In January, we organized and successfully ran Hoops for Hope, our community grant fundraiser. It was a basketball tournament from which we donated all proceeds to Omaha’s Hope Center for Kids. We also participated in Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service focusing on literacy activities.

In February, we sold Denim for Disabilities stickers to raise money for  theMunroe Meyer Institute (MMI), and we had a large group of NSSLHA members participate in the MMI Walk and Roll for Disabilities benefitting the C. Louis Meyer Rehabilitation Foundation. We raised $625 to donate to this foundation!

March was a month in which we organized and successfully ran our annual Pancake Feed, which is a fundraiser for the Autism Society of Nebraska. From this event we raised $574 to donate. In addition, NSSLHA members have advocated for our profession by writing letters to senators concerning current political issues.

In April, we donated $100 to the Special Olympics that was held in Lincoln, NE. We donated $50 worth in books as well as collected books to send to a program in a South Africa school to rebuild their library. In addition, we donated $250 to 4 Paws for Ability for our NSSLHA Loves contribution. NSSLHA members volunteered at the Omaha Children’s Museum Autism Night. Volunteers participated in UNO’s Choosing Education Organization event which involved advocating our profession to a group of Omaha’s 8th graders.

NSSLHA members volunteered at a Career Fair; the members informed and encouraged middle school students to join our profession. Also, throughout the semester, members have been organizing our largest annual event, Together We Dance, which is a fundraiser for the Autism Society of Nebraska (ASN) that was held on April 23rd and was quite successful. We raised over $1,000 to donate to ASN’s Puzzle Walk!

Already in May, UNO NSSLHA members participated and volunteered at the Autism Society of Nebraska’s annual Puzzle Walk to help raise awareness of autism!
